How long have you been a health nut in training (and what does that look like for you)?
I have been a health nut in training for a year & a half now. For me I was raised in a family that didn’t think much of being healthy & you were supposed to finish every bite on your over sized proportioned plate! So I had a lot to learn. So, I downloaded the MyFitnessPal app & started counting calories. I did know that after a million yo-yo diets, that the weight wasn’t going to just drop off. So I joined a gym as well. I counted calories daily & worked out 3 days a week. Cardio & strength training.
What motivated you to begin your journey to health?
My motivation behind all of this…my health, my daughters, & the search for myself. I was at my highest weight of 236. I was border-line diabetic & my blood pressure was getting higher and higher. My daughters, 2 beautiful healthy girls that I didn’t even have the energy to enjoy. I was that mom that sat on my phone and watched the girls play at the park, rather than chase them around. In my head though, as badly as I wanted to be the healthy active mom, I felt so selfish to actually take the time to work out & take care of myself. That’s where the last motivation falls in. Me! I needed to find myself… And when I did, I found out that I love to run, I love to box, and I love fitness!
Who have been your biggest supporters?
My biggest supporters were definitely my daughters who have come to every 5K and also joined me in them. They cheer me on & my oldest daughter even notices my progress. Every time she hugs me she says I feel smaller in her arms! As well my mom and grandma who have had to do plenty of babysitting while I work on me! And while unfortunately I felt like people I thought were friends seemed to not enjoy my weight loss as much as I did and almost seemed bothered by it, I did have one friend, Nidia, who has cheered me on since day one. I can send her pics and transformations and she has always cheered me on. So while I didn’t have a lot of support, I have had a handful of amazing supporters on my side.
How has your choice to get healthy impacted other areas of your life?
This lifestyle change has impacted me in so many ways. I have learned to love myself. I have become confident with myself. I feel better now at 29 than I did at 21. I am proud of myself because I can say I worked hard in my journey. It has also become a passion of mine to help others. I would love to become a personal trainer or teach classes one day.
What piece of advice would you give to someone who is just starting out?
For those just getting started… Get your mind right. It’s not a month long choice… It’s a lifestyle. Be gentle with yourself. You will have bumps in the road. Weight gains, losses, eat pizza, and eat salads. It becomes more about feeling your best, feeling truly healthy, rather than the number on the scale. Take the time for yourself. Take care of you… You are worth it!!!!
